The Day Before Christmas©
by: Jerry Evans
Twas the day before Christmas and all
through the court
The judge and the lawyers were having a
snort
And there in the halls of the courthouse
supreme
They planned and they plotted their next
legal scheme
In pre-trial meetings they lit up a smoke
All thought the next case would be a big
joke
We'll go through the motions the lawyers
agreed
We'll protest and argue as much as we need
We'll write a petition that doesn't make
sense
And we'll do everything to destroy the
defense
We'll razzle and dazzle and put on a show
And use every legal trick that we know
So they wrote out their script and began
to rehearse
Till they knew it by heart, every chapter
and verse
It was State against Church in debate on
that day
And should the state lose, there would be
hell to pay
The judge in his robe took a seat at the
bench
Dressed all in black with the heart of a
grinch
When out of the chambers there came into
view
A hoard of more lawyers from ACLU
And sensing a feeling of impending doom
The courtroom was hushed when they entered
the room
They all looked the same they were from
the same school
Where Liberal of thought is their Cardinal
rule
They touted their cause in diversity's
name
While trying to make everyone think the
same
How clever the guise, how deceptive the
ruse
How noble the pose they so sorely abused
The court called to order about to begin
All raised their hand and were duly sworn
in
The Spirit of Christmas was called to the
stand
The charges were read and the state took
command
Not guilty the Spirit of Christmas replied
I stand for the birth of our Christ
crucified
I came here in love bringing peace and
goodwill
I don't understand all this hatred you
feel
Why does the state loath me and hold me in
fear
I bring you good tiding each year after
year
And I pray that all men give Caesar his
due
I pose not one threat, no not one threat
to you
What hardness of heart and how narrow of
mind
How haplessly lost and how helplessly
blind
How small of an ego, how small can it be
When men use the court to persecute me
Objections to that, was the lawyers' reply
Just answer the questions don't try to
deny
The myth you portray you can’t justify
It's just a nice story, it's all one big
lie
The lawyers continued to argue and shout
Their case against Christmas, to prove
beyond doubt
The Spirit of Christmas was such an
offense
There was no excuse there could be defense
And coming to rest with all argument done
The state was so smug, and assured they
had won
But shirking his duty and thinking to hide
The judge said the jury would have to
decide
The judge gave them leave to discuss and
debate
To judge that sweet Spirit, and seal
Spirit's fate
The verdict assured for the state's point
of view
But Spirit would teach them a lesson or
two
He spoke not a word He just let His light
shine
No words could enhance that blithe Spirit
Devine
But when the strange silence was finally
broke
"I am that I am" were the words Spirit
spoke
At last when the jury was finally done,
All anxiously waiting the verdict to come
The jury filed in and returned to the
court
The foreman arose to begin his report
Not Guilty! Not Guilty! the juryman cried
Your cause against Christmas is not
justified
All charges were false, they were all a
pretense
No reasonable person would take an offense
There's no legal cause for appeal or
review
This case is clearly not in your purview
So court is dismissed and the state must
concede
The state has no province in matters of
creed
It's up to the people, it's they who
decide
To celebrate Christmas throughout the
yuletide
To all who oppose we still wish you good
cheer
You'll have your un-Christmas the rest of
the year
